Jim’ll Fix It with i-Pix Satellites

LD: Tom Kinane

Tom specified 40 i-Pix Satellite LED fixtures to lighting the set on the recent pilot for a new series of the legendary ‘dreams come true’ TV programme “Jim’ll Fix It”.

The show was recorded at MTV in Camden, London, directed by John L Spencer and produced by North One.

Set designer Richard Drew’s creation was based around a set of horseshoe shaped arches that were dressed in various pink soft materials.

They were really restricted for height and space when it came to lighting explains Kinane, making the Satellites “the perfect fixture for the job”.

He continues, “They gave us a huge amount of variation for a limited budget and brought lots of value to the production that it wouldn’t have otherwise had”.

He adds that another massive advantage is that the fixtures are small and easy to hide around sets and scenic pieces. Their aesthetics are also such that if they do happen to be caught in the odd shot, it’s not an issue.

The Satellites were supplied by Blackburn-based lighting rental company HSL, and the job was co-ordinated for them by Sean McGlone. Kinane also reports that all the technicians love the Satellites for their expedient size, light weight and easy rigging and portability.

Kinane worked in close collaboration with moving light operator Svend Pedersen, who controlled all the moving and digital lighting from a WholeHog 2 console.

The Satellites were all positioned on the floor. “This was extremely handy” says Kinane. With careful use of the clip-on beam-shapers they could bend the light around the corners of the arches and also beam it right up to the top of the set, which “Made all the difference”.
